Writers' Workshop
"Nonlinear Storytelling"
Thursday, June 11
2:00pm - 3:15pm
Geelong Library and Heritage Centre (The Dome)
Geelong Library Nyaal Discussion Room 4 (Level 2)Stories don't have to move in straight lines.
Fragmented or nonlinear narratives disrupt chronology, allowing writers to reveal information out of order, mirror emotional states, and create powerful moments of realisation. By playing with time—through memory, flashback, looping moments, or disjointed sequences—you can invite readers to actively piece together meaning.
In this session, we’ll explore:
Different approaches to nonlinear structure (flashbacks, reverse chronology, circular narratives, mosaic storytelling)
How withholding and releasing information shapes tension and discovery
The relationship between memory, time, and emotional truth
How structure itself can reflect character psychology or theme
Writing Challenge
Write a piece (800 words max) that does not follow a linear timeline.
Your story might:
- Move backwards from an ending to uncover how it happened
- Jump between different moments in time without clear transitions
- Circle around a single event from multiple points in time
- Interweave past and present in a way that gradually reveals meaning
- Be told through fragments (memories, notes, scenes, images)
