In this workshop we'll explore the power of the slow reveal - how subtle details and shifting perceptions can transform a story.

Great literature often derives its power not from sudden twists, but from the slow, masterful reveal — those gradual shifts in perception that change how we see a character, a relationship, a place, or even reality itself. From Henry James’s subtle psychological unravelings to the quiet reorientations in works by Kazuo Ishiguro and Alice Munro, the slow reveal has long been a cornerstone of compelling storytelling across genres and eras.

In this workshop, we’ll explore this essential literary technique and practice using it to create deeper resonance and emotional impact in your own writing.

Writing Challenge: "Perception Flip"

Write a short story (850 words max) in which the narrator or main character’s understanding of a situation, person, or memory changes completely through a series of small, accumulating details.

  • Use a slow reveal — no sudden twists or dramatic confessions. The shift must happen through subtle observations, small interactions, or quiet realisations.
  • Start with a clear, confident perception.
  • End with the opposite or significantly altered perception.
  • Reveal the new truth only through showing.
