This is a poetry workshop specifically concerned with the non-prescriptive form of the aubade (leave-taking, lament at parting).
Aubade poems are “daybreak” love songs that welcome the new morning but also lament the end of the night. Thus, it is typically about lovers parting at dawn.
After an introduction to the form by way of six poems which trace a brief history of the form and highlight its non-prescriptive nature (a contemporary poem by Charles is included), participants will be encouraged to develop their own aubade poems with support from the facilitators as well from other participants through structured supportive feedback.
Participant discussion will be encouraged throughout the workshop. Participants will be encouraged to think beyond the duration of the workshop for re-drafting / polishing of their work through email communications with the facilitators before the production of a chapbook of the collected poems.
This workshop welcomes interested writers from diverse skill levels, ages 16+.
