We have all heard that “reading is good for you” from our teachers and parents. We might scoff at this truism, but it turns out that reading actually does more for us than just making us smarter.
Reading provides us with the opportunity to imagine unseen people and places which equips us with empathy and understanding. This act of escapism improves our mood and reduces stress. The mechanics of reading creates and strengthens neural pathways that optimises our cognitive function and, according to a 2016 study, reading makes you live longer! Reading throughout our lives contributes to wellbeing and positive mental health.
