The Geelong West Free Library was opened in the Geelong West Town Hall by Cr John Ince, Mayor of the Borough of Geelong West on 3 July 1885. Its closure was forced in 1890 due to lack of funds but the library reopened in 1891. The Geelong West Free Library relocated in March 1939 to the old Geelong West Court House building. Following minor renovations, the Geelong West Municipal Library was officially opened in 1953 and in 1967 there was an official opening of additions to the library. On 17 October 2008, the Geelong West Library and customer service centre redevelopment was officially opened by the Hon Richard Wynne MP, Minister for Local Government and Cr Barbara H Abley AM DSJ, City of Greater Geelong.
Geelong West Library is a popular gathering place in the heart of the vibrant Pakington Street commercial and retail precinct. We’re mid-sized and always busy with regular programs running in our colourful young readers’ area and many regulars enjoying our newspaper and magazine reading room. Our library originally opened in April 1967 and was refurbished in September 2008. We are co-located with a City of Greater Geelong customer service point.
