Local Word Writers Festival is an annual three-day event of local writers presenting workshops, presentations and panel discussions for writers and readers.
This experiential workshop introduces participants to somatic techniques for writing from the senses. We will share simple movement practices to help connect to the sense of gravity, weight and place as an embodied foundation for the other senses. Explorations into peripheral vision, sound mapping, and imaginative forays into the environment serve as pathways into writing with and from the body’s myriad ways of perceiving.
No experience is necessary, just a willingness to try some gentle experiments in moving and writing, and to share your writing with other participants. Somatic writing can open up new pathways of perception, and foster the development of richness and multi-dimensional writing in any genre.
Kim Sargent-Wishart’s writing practice has emerged out of over 40 years of dancing, choreographing and improvising, and over 20 years of sharing a somatic practice called Body-Mind Centering®. Kim practices and teaches Somatic Writing, which is a way of approaching writing through moving and engaging the senses and imagination. She has co-edited a book, The Art of Embodiment (DTAA/2021) containing accounts of experiential movement-based practices across creative arts and therapeutic settings. She is currently working on a series of short field guides called Circulate: Somatic Approaches to Creative Practice.
Up to 15 participants aged 18+. For those interested in exploring movement, kinesthesia and the senses in relation to writing.
