Mal Walden, Australia's longest-serving veteran TV news presenter and established author joins us to discuss his 50-year career in Australian news media and the stories that inspire him to write.
‘You’ll never be journalist’s bootlace!’ Mal Walden was 17 years of age when he applied for his first job in media, and during his cadetship in the early ’60s, Mal Walden heard these words frequently from his news editor and media mentor, John Maher. Walden not only proved his mentor wrong, he went on to become a respected journalist and the longest-serving newsman on Australian television with a media career spanned six decades in radio broadcasting and television.
Since his retirement from television in 2013 Mal has written eight books: his personal and insightful memoir The News Man (2016), and Good News! (2017) a selection of feel-good stories that helped shape Melbourne; Don't Piss in my Pocket and Tell Me It’s Raining (2018), Mal Walden's crazy Aussie crims (2020), Mal Walden's Aussie Icons and Legends (2021), Mal Walden's Aussie Myths, Mysteries and Memories (2022), Homeland Heroes (2023) and most recently, Box Kites to Boeings (2024), the story of the sky-high heroes of Aussie aviation.
