Discover the stories of Afghan women through their beautiful, traditional embroidery in a warm and welcoming space.
Join us for a beautiful and calming session exploring traditional Afghan hand embroidery and weaving techniques, guided by a skilled Afghan artisan - Salma Gul (Gul Designs).
Hand embroidery is a traditional and essential part of Afghan fashion, typically created by women using vibrant and intricate stitching. This embroidery is renowned for its elegance, precision, and the way the thread seamlessly blends into the fabric — it often appears printed until touched.
This hands-on workshop invites participants to learn simple stitches, hear the cultural stories behind the designs, and create a unique piece to take home. Participants will explore various styles of Afghan embroidery, including Khamak, Qandahari Dozi, Kashida Dozi, Sae Koka, Chahar Pesta, Pokhta Dozi, Jawak, Lis, Zanjirak, and Cross-stitch. Samples of each style will be available, and participants can choose the design they would like to learn.
All are welcome to join this workshop, especially those interested in learning about other cultures.
No prior experience is needed – just curiosity and a love for craft. All materials provided. Please remember to bring glasses if you wear them.
