The Price We Pay is a book about the real life experiences faced by a typical member of the Victoria Police Force.
Some are funny, others are scary, all are brutally honest. The accounts give an insight into the daily life of a young constable in uniform and later, a detective in the Criminal Investigation Branch. He loved his job; it meant everything to him. He was passionate about the job; he just didn’t realise it was also going to kill him if given the chance.
Underpinning this real life experience is the hidden cost of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. It is estimated that 1 in 5 Australian police will suffer PTSD as a result of their service. Large numbers have committed suicide. People will read the stories and wonder how anyone could survive such horror apparently unscathed.
The book may outline a journey in the police force, but it is the aftermath of dealing with PTSD and the hidden cost that is just as revealing. This message of despair followed by hope shows that you can deal with PTSD despite the horrendous experiences of the past.
*Please note, some people may find parts of the story distressing.*
