A Place That Changed You
Friday, November 20
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Geelong Library and Heritage Centre (The Dome)
Geelong Library Nyaal Discussion Room 4 (Level 2)Places carry stories. A street corner, a hospital corridor, a coastline, or a house we can no longer enter can become inseparable from the people and experiences we associate with them.
In this session, we will explore how poets use place to examine memory, identity, belonging, loss, and change. We’ll consider how landscape can become emotional landscape — how weather, architecture, sounds, smells, and physical details can reveal something about the person experiencing them.
Writing Challenge
Write a poem about a place that changed your speaker in some way.
Avoid simply describing the place. Instead, allow the physical environment to reveal something about the speaker's past or present. The place might have changed, the speaker might have changed, or both.
Ask yourself:
- What does this place remember that the speaker has forgotten?
- What physical detail carries the most emotional weight?
- How does the speaker see this place differently now?
