Understanding Referendums

Find out more about this important democratic process.

Referendums are few and far between in Australia. Since federation we have only voted in 44 referendums and only eight of those have been passed. Join us at the Torquay Library to get a run down on how referendums work, why they are held and why is it hard to get one passed.

About the Library

Located in Torquay’s Surf City Plaza, adjacent to the Surf World Museum and Community Hall, Torquay Library is a popular community gathering space, particularly for families and holidaymakers. The branch features zones for reading, studying and working, a dedicated area for children, public access PCs and free WiFi. Regular Baby, Toddler and Preschool Story Time sessions are held here, and many events and programs for adults are also run throughout the year.
