Humanity in the Unreal - Crafting Speculative Fiction

In strange times, strange fiction can help us make sense of the world. This one-day intensive workshop is designed for new and emerging writers interested in the possibilities of speculative fiction, and how to mix high-concept narratives with strong writing craft.

Through discussions and interactive exercises, we’ll cover building worlds without spending decades doing it, and creating compelling characters in stories where the rules are a bit different to our own. There will be plenty of time for generative work, as we explore how to write about big ideas without forgetting our humanity.

This workshop is available for up to 15 people aged 18+, aimed at beginner to intermediate skill level, for new and emerging writers interested in the possibilities of speculative fiction. Please note we do not provide catering other than tea, coffee and water throughout the day and participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or visit Public Café on Ground Floor of the Library.

Ticket prices: $80 or $40 for concession holders.

Rhett Davis is the author of Arborescence, a novel about what trees might do if we weren’t careful. It was shortlisted for the Aurealis Award for Science Fiction and the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction, and longlisted for the Indie Book Awards and the ALS Gold Medal. His first novel, Hovering, was about a city that wasn’t sure that it should be there. It won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript and was shortlisted for the Readings New Australian Fiction Prize and the Aurealis Award for Science Fiction. Rhett has also been a manager, a consultant, a business analyst, a bookseller, and a creative writing tutor. He lives and writes mostly on Wadawurrung country in Geelong.
