Crafting Suspense in Crime Fiction

Join us for our next Writer's Workshop, where we'll dive into the art of crafting suspense in crime fiction.

The Writing challenge: write a short story using one of the following outlines - 

1) "The Suspicious Stranger" - Start with a character noticing a mysterious stranger in an ordinary setting (e.g., a café, park, or bus). The narrative should build suspense, hinting at the stranger's intentions without giving away their motives until the end. 

2) "The Clue and the Consequence" - Write a short scene where a character discovers an unusual object or clue that foreshadows a crime. Emphasize creating intrigue rather than giving away the details.

3) "The Alibi" - Write from the perspective of a character explaining their alibi for a crime they may or may not have committed. The goal is to create doubt and tension, leaving the reader unsure of the character’s innocence.

Submissions should be no longer than 800 words and may be written in either first or third person. On the day, participants will briefly share their process, any difficulties, or creative decisions they made.

Whether you’re an experienced writer or just starting out, this session is perfect for anyone looking to expand their storytelling toolkit.
