Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Getjawil Multipurpose Room (Level 1)Curious and want to learn more about Diwali? Explore different ways to celebrate Diwali and understand its key cultural traditions - from rituals, decorations and food, to saree dressing up!
What to expect:
- This workshop presents a selection of key traditions, rituals and practices typically held when getting ready for and celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights.
- The content is suitable for adults who wish to learn more about Diwali and the Indian culture, regardless of culture or religion.
- It is delivered by a mix of presenters in the Getjawil Multipurpose Room on the first floor of the library.
- It will cover:
- Exploratory Q&A talk and discussion - with Smita Bhandari, local picture book author of The Spirit of Diwali. Smita will introduce what Diwali is all about, explain the significance of bringing the dark into light, the days in the lead up and how they incorporate and celebrate Diwali with their family in Geelong.
- Learn about arts and decorations - from diwali decorations are typically used and their significance to diwali, the materials used and placing, to the different designs. Facilitated demonstration then design of a Rangoli by Priyanka from the Art of Henna.
- Learn about saree dress, accessories and wearables - learn about the different traditional attire and dress wear in India, the jewellery, accessories and how they signify different meanings and different wear for Diwali. There will be a practical saree-draping demonstration and even a chance to try on a saree!
- Chat with chai and light refreshments - an opportunity for you to chat and connect with chai, ask any other questions and try traditional Diwali party snacks and sweets
