Local Word Writers Festival is an annual two-day event of local writers presenting workshops, presentations and author in-conversations for writers and readers.
“We need to tell more stories that celebrate and explore the complex, dynamic, joyful and sometimes mundane heart that is regional Australia, and the best people to tell those stories are regional writers.”
Join us for a broad panel discussion involving writers who have set their works on and been influenced by our magnificent environment of Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, Surf Coast and, more broadly, Wadawurrung Country.
The panel features Gunditjmara actor, writer and theatre-maker Tom Molyneux, creator of the stage play, The Mission; Dorothy Johnston, author of One for the Master (Wakefield Press/1997) and Ruth (Hale & Iremonger/1986), which were both shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award; Kgshak Akec, author of Hopeless Kingdom (UWAP/2023), shortlisted for the 2023 Miles Franklin Literary Award and winner of The 2021 Dorothy Hewett Award for an Unpublished Manuscript.
With panel chair, Geelong author Rhett Davis (Hovering Hachette/2022), winner of the 2020 Victorian Premier's Award for an Unpublished Manuscript.
