Little Placemakers
Little Placemakers: exploring Central Geelong and the Waterfront through the eyes of children and their caregivers.
Little Placemakers is a creative engagement initiative that encourages children and their caregivers to share their experiences, ideas and aspirations for the places that matter most to them.
Children interact with streets, parks, libraries, playgrounds, open spaces and community destinations every day, yet they are not always asked how these places could better support play, learning, connection and belonging. Little Placemakers creates a fun and accessible way for children to contribute their perspectives through drawing, colouring, creative activities and conversations.
The project draws inspiration from child-friendly city principles and the Urban95 framework, which encourages communities to consider places from the perspective of a young child. By listening to the experiences of children and caregivers, communities can gain valuable insights into how public spaces can better support family life, wellbeing and social connection.
During the Geelong Wonder Children's Festival, children and families will be invited to participate in a creative activity exploring what makes places welcoming, fun and engaging. Participants will have the opportunity to share ideas, contribute drawings and reflect on the spaces they enjoy spending time in throughout Central Geelong and the Waterfront.
Visual storyteller Elise Motalli will create live illustrations throughout the session, capturing ideas and conversations as they emerge. Through her artwork, children's stories and perspectives will be transformed into visual narratives that celebrate their creativity and imagination.
The insights gathered through Little Placemakers will contribute to ongoing conversations about place activation, programming and the creation of child-friendly public spaces across Central Geelong and the Waterfront.
