Join Narrelle M Harris and Lucy Sussex in conversation about The Only One in the World: A Sherlock Holmes Anthology (Clan Destine Press).

Sherlock Holmes, the character created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, is now arguably the world’s most famous fictional detective. Just a century later there were an estimated 25,000 stage adaptations, films, television productions and publications featuring Holmes and his biographer, Dr John Watson. According to the Guinness World Records, Holmes is the most portrayed literary human character on screen. Pastiches of Conan Doyle's 56 short stories and four novels are even more ubiquitous.

Narrelle, a Melbourne-based Sherlock tragic, asked writers from across the world for stories that explored Holmes and Watson in different cultures and different times and with different genders, sexualities and proclivities. The thirteen resulting stories are an exciting mix – Viking Iceland, and 17th century England; 19th century Ireland, Germany, and Poland; South Africa in the 1970s and New Orleans of the 1920s and 2020s; contemporary Australia, USA, India and Portugal and Russia in 2051. In one story Sherlock is an AI. In another, the two sleuths are Shirle-Locke Holmes and Jane Watson from Diva Drag Detectives in New Orleans.
