Slam poetry creates deeper inter-cultural understanding and social cohesion through learning and performance
Not your average writing workshop! With a focus on writing for performance, Australian Poetry Slam (APS) Workshops get participants excited and engaged with the writing process. Each participant will create a new piece of poetry using their own experiences, community and identity as inspiration. These workshops teach new ways of expressing creative ideas using live performance, writing techniques, and video references.
Length: 2 hours
Group size: 20
Cost: Free of charge
If you would like to participate at the APS Heat being held the following evening, also at Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, poet registrations will open from 6.00pm.
These two Australian Poetry Slam events are free of charge and are booked separately. You can attend either one or both and there is no requirement to participate at the heat.
Facilitated by Huda the Goddess (current Australian Poetry Slam Champion). Huda the Goddess is a spoken word poet, educator, mental health advocate, dancer and workshop facilitator. She describes poetry as one of her senses that allows her to turn her experiences into art and is currently working on her first poetry collection. As a proud African-Muslim woman it is important to her that young women from her community are represented and their stories are shared. Having the chance to make people feel something will always be her goal as an artist.
Content Warning: APS events are for all ages, however some content may not be suitable for children.
